The new year has arrived, and we are in full swing with resolutions. Somewhere on that list, we often find ourselves writing that we wish to be healthier, exercise, eat better, and so on. We get our gym memberships and stock the fridge with kale and detox juices, but after a few weeks, we have reverted to our old patterns.
This year, it’s time to stick to those goals and make a healthy lifestyle that works for you long-term. Here’s how to make 2022 your healthiest year ever.
Go to Bed Earlier
In 2022, it’s time to prioritize sleep. Sleep is such an important aspect of our wellbeing, yet so many of us are sleeping much less than we should. Try to go to bed earlier, making gradual changes if you find it easier that way. Go to sleep 15 minutes earlier for one week and then 15 minutes earlier than that for the following week. Create a relaxing and enjoyable nighttime routine that you look forward to, which will prepare you and your body for rest.
Eat More Vegetables
It’s a new year, and it’s time to accept that vegetables are not only healthy but also delicious! Find recipes with veggies that you love, and don’t be afraid to try something new. Spices and herbs can make any vegetable taste good according to your preference. A fun way to make sure you’re eating a variety of vegetables is to have at least three different colors on your plate. This ensures that your body is getting a diversity of vitamins and minerals.
Make Small Changes
New year’s resolutions often fail as quickly as they were created because the change is too much at once. Instead, try to make small changes gradually. Allow yourself to get comfortable with one new habit or routine before introducing more. Another great way to incorporate small changes into your routine is to habit stack, meaning that you attach a new task to a habit you are already used to. For example, place your multivitamins next to the coffee machine so that you remember to take them when you make your morning coffee.
Move More
This new year, make an effort to move your body more. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go to the gym. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk with your friends to a nearby café, take up an active hobby such as cycling or roller-skating— whatever you enjoy. This type of movement usually requires less motivation because it’s fun and not considered “exercise,” but you still get your steps in. Bring your exercise outdoors whenever you can to get some fresh air and elevate your mood.
Let Go of What Doesn’t Serve You
Health isn’t only about exercise and nutrition— you also need to take care of your mental wellbeing. Stress is incredibly detrimental to our health. This new year, let go of anything that is dragging you down. If something doesn’t make you feel good or improves your life, ask yourself if you really want to spend your energy on it. Get comfortable saying no to plans if they make you feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable. Prioritize yourself and your needs to make room for the parts of life that fill your cup.
